The University of Edinburgh Business School was pleased to host a Conference on Technology-led Emergence and Transformation of Markets on 28 June 2018.

In our conversation, we will reflect on how contexts of entrepreneurship, relational networks and entrepreneurial emotions impact the emergence of new markets.

About the conference

This conference has been organised by the vibrant community of PhD students and faculty of the University of Edinburgh Business School. This initiative enables us to create, develop and consolidate a widely recognised space of communication recognised in our wider community for its vocation to expand Entrepreneurship & Innovation (E&I) research horizons. The conference provides a unique opportunity to explore the boundaries of E&I research from a multidisciplinary perspective, reaching out to technology, humanities and social sciences to advance our knowledge in technology-led market dynamics and challenging the actual assumptions concerning their processes and practices.

The ethos of this event is the exchange of original and innovative ideas between PhD students, early career fellows and experienced academics who are eager to explore the socio-emotional synergies behind the generation of new technologies and ecosystems that are pushing boundaries of these fields. This will require new empirical and theoretical work to understand the vertiginous creation and evolution of these innovative landscapes.

Marta Bernal

Marta Bernal is a final-year PhD candidate and research assistant at the University of Edinburgh Business School. She graduated in Psychology at the University of Malaga (Spain) and received her MBA from EAE Business School (Spain). She was selected to collaborate as a doctoral consultant for Creative Scotland during a three-month internship. The outputs of this project were discussed by academics, professionals and policymakers in the field. The quality of her work has been recognised with the creative industries' best paper awards in 2017's British Academy of Management and the Institute of Small Business and Entrepreneurship conferences.

Her research interests include creative industries ecosystems, the selection of creative projects in cultural industries, and the role of emotions in entrepreneurial processes.


Augusto Rocha

Augusto joined the University of Edinburgh Business School as a Doctoral Researcher in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation group in September 2015. Prior to that, he did his MSc on Entrepreneurship and Business Creation in Portugal and was a Fintech entrepreneur in Brazil. Augusto used his previous experience as a Computer Scientist to start a Fintech enterprise developing software for the Brazilian Stock Exchange Market (B3 - formerly BM&FBOVESPA).

Augusto has been conducting research on entrepreneurial ecosystems, social contexts, technology based companies, and innovation.


Fabio Rocha

Fabio joined the University of Edinburgh Business School as a Doctoral Researcher in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation group in September 2016. He did an MSc in Business Administration and an MBA in Brazil. Before turning to academia, Fabio developed a solid career over more than 25 years with field leadership roles in enterprise sales, marketing and business development with companies like SAP, IBM and HP, among others.

Fabio's research includes the study of co-innovation processes in digital platforms and the emergence of new IT markets.


Janina Reich

Janina joined the University of Edinburgh Business School as a Doctoral Researcher in the Strategy group in September 2015. She has worked for more than 10 years in consulting, focusing on organisational change, lean management, HR and M&A processes - areas she is also interested in as a researcher. Janina completed an MLitt in International Business at the University of St Andrews in 2010. She also graduted with a Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural European and American Studies at the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 2003.

In her research, Janina is interested in organisational change with a particular focus on organisational identity and organisational design.


Karim Atalla

Karim joined the University of Edinburgh Business School in January 2015. He is researching the internationalisation strategies of entrepreneurs in different economies. He received his MBA from UEBS in 2013, and his bachelor's in Accounting from the American University in Cairo in 2006.

Karim is also a professional management consultant working on cross-borders M&A of entrepreneurial projects and SMEs. His academic and professional interests are directly aligned with the areas of entrepreneurship and emergence of new markets.


Dr Ben Spigel

Ben's research focuses on the geography of innovative entrepreneurship. He is particularly interested in questions about entrepreneurial ecosystems and the role in which localised social and economic structures affect the entrepreneurship process and firm strategy. He takes an evolutionary and institutional perspective towards the geography of entrepreneurship by studying how different entrepreneurial environments develop and evolve within places and how this influences firm startup strategy. Ben is also carrying out research on entrepreneurship in resource economies such as Aberdeen and Newfoundland.

Ben Spigel

Dr Kristina Poto─Źnik

Kristina graduated in psychology at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and received her PhD in Work and Organizational Psychology from the University of Valencia (Spain). She is a chartered member of British Psychological Society (BPS), an academic associate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and a member of International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP), the International Test Commission (ITC), European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology (EAWOP), and Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).

Kristina's research interests include innovation and creativity in the workplace, antecedents and consequences of (early) retirement, managing ageing workforce, leadership and teamwork.
